No more distortion in WoGue

This post was made with an older stylesheet

To this day it worked perfectly and we accepted every opinion about everything mentioned here. We always tried to offer answers to comments that were questioning something and we liked to discus things further with people that sometimes know much more than us like the developers of an application discussed or the artist of a theme etc.

The comments section of every article on this website was something we were really proud of as many eminent and unknown developers, sick and healthy thinking users, newbies and experienced users, have-a-life and doesn’t-have-a-life people met here and exchanged opinions in a well mannered way. Even when things got out of hand a few times we didn’t say or do anything as this is a natural part of the case.

Lately we noticed a few people coming here screaming that Gnome sucks and everyone here is just an idiot. Ok, we accepted that for a few days but now it has gotten completely out of hand so we are forced to start deleting comments. I never imagined I would have to delete comments after three months of WoGue’s existence but it seems that we have no other choice.

Expressing your opinion is perfectly fine and you can also use harsh language here if you want but we won’t accept any more direct insults to us, other readers and developers through the comment section. The comment section will stay clean of swearing, serving a useful purpose for everyone again.

Because we believe that people might change at some point in the future, we decided not to ban any IPs at the time. Every comment that contains any kind of attacking/insulting swearing, excessive irony etc will be instantly deleted :)

We can't watch comments unless G+ provides an API or if you send a notification, e.g +World Of Gnome
Sometimes is better to place your questions on GNOME Community

    First? *looks around suspiciously*

I think it would be great to have an official guideline for the specific kinds of comments which aren’t allowed/desired. I mean, are we just banning direct gibes, or are we warning people who don’t like GNOME to stop saying, “GNOME sucks!”?

    • alex285

This is about comments that insult directly people. Mostly “us” and Gnome developers.

      • ScionicSpectre

Alright, sounds fair. I think ad hominem attacks should be discouraged altogether, as they don’t get us anywhere. If people want to blow of some steam, I’m not sure if the comments section is the right place for it.

    • Bill_Toulas

But we never had any problem with any kind of opinion as long as this is expressed in a proper manner. Not liking Gnome is natural and saying it here is fair and wanted. We’d like to discus why people hate this or that and exchange opinions about things, but we can’t discus with people who call us and Gnome developers idiots :)

      • alex285

Maybe that guy was Linus :)

      • ScionicSpectre

Agreed. :) Just wasn’t sure about what exactly the article was saying, but Alex cleared it up for me.

    • anon

      What about removing “First” posts?

      • ScionicSpectre

Ironically, that’s the first time I saw fit to use that expression.

        • Bill_Toulas

And you didn’t just say “first”! You actually contributed to the start of a conversation about guidelines etc…

      • Bill_Toulas

It’s not like we have “First” posts in every article
I saw it happening for the first time on this article :)
Whatever the case the “first” posts don’t insult other readers, editors or developers so…

  • Aventinus

You know, having so many trolls/insulters is sign of success… :)

    • alex285

haha weird way to define success :)

  • badass
    • alex285

Believe it or not, I am not even curious about these things anymore. Let them fight :)

      • badass

but linus says the same things like a guy here

        • badass

i think you didn’t read it

          • alex285

I have read it on G+ because I have them on cycles. I didn’t read it from OMG, but I saw he has the conversations between Icaza and Torvalds. But I didn’t understand what you mean “but linus says the same things like a guy here”.

          • badass

i hope you read omgubuntu, cuz i don’t know what’s going on g+

perhaps that guy you think he is troll or whatever, he actually tries to help but you don’t listen to him.

you don’t agree with that guy cuz he is a troll. do you think that linus is a troll too or clueless?

          • alex285

That’s why I said (below) that “Maybe that guy was Linus”. How do you exactly help by calling people idiots?

          • badass

i don’t think that he actually mean it, i think he is pissed off.

why you only keep that word? you don’t care about the rest which is the same.

i haven’t get an answer yet? is linus a clueless troll?

          • alex285

            1. He said that like 10 times. He also said more than this, anyway. You probably missed his other comments.

            2. I did answer you. I am not very interested in what Torvalds says on this topic. I have watched most of his conferences on YouTube and he used to make such comments. Nothing new here, nothing surprising. Linus blames everything. I could make an endless catalog with the software (and people) that Linus has blamed :)
By the way Linus doesn’t spam blogs by calling people idiots.

          • ghost

ok. linus blames everything and everyone else who blames you, is wrong.

if someone treat you like an idiot, force you to do something, ignores you, he thinks that is greater and knows everything better than you and screw you work.

what he is supposed to be?

          • Bill_Toulas

Ok it is natural to feel like that and we want that kind of people to come here and talk about it but not while degrading others here. Some people come here although they hate Gnome 3 and that means that they care about Gnome and they want it to be better and work again for them. Suggestions, rants, discussions, complains, logical explanations, exchanging of opinions all that is welcome, but we won’t tolerate any more unconstructive “you are all idiots” comments. They degrade this website and undermine the real value of comments section. Whatever your opinion about anything, try to stay constructive in a conversation.

          • ghost

i ask you a simple question but you gave an answer like a politician.

if they don’t listen to you, then how can i give them suggestions

          • Bill_Toulas

Who says they don’t listen to you? Or to put it differently, why shouldn’t they listen to me instead? I love Gnome Shell and I work with it every day doing things faster than ever. I find it beautiful, you find it an abomination. Who is right? Who should they listen to?

      • badass

i think you didn’t read it.
