GNOME Shell 3.9.4 Release!

This post was made with an older stylesheet

The 4th release of GNOME Shell 3.9 series keeps a low profile with no fancy new features for end users, but with many bug fixes and clean ups. An improved notification system will probably arrive at version 3.9.5 (jul 31), while a complete list of all new features of Shell 3.10 will be available after GUADEC (Aug 1 – Aug 8) and before the beta release (Aug 21).

GNOME Devs are trying GNOME in the 239 PIXELS/INCH screen of Google’s Chromebook Pixel, to improve visuals (like icons) in high definition displays. Pixel also features a touch screen, but the 1299$ Pixel’s price isn’t really attractive if you want a touchy GNOME ;)

GNOME Shell 3.9.4 doesn’t contain any major visually differences than 3.8

Nice! Any info about that upcoming improved notification system?

    Transparent top panel in overview?

    • Michael Mistretta

If you zoom in, you’ll notice is you zoom in to the picture more that the top panel is still black, though this makes me kind of want a transparent top panel in overview now. The glare makes this easy to miss.

      • George Farris

Just install “Activities” extension and you can set the panel transparency. This really should be a normal feature of GNOME panel.

        • Michael Mistretta

I think I’ve installed it before but I removed it because I was having an extension conflict that would cause Gnome Shell to randomly purge all extensions and go back to default.. does it change transparency in overview only though?

          • George Farris

I used to have this problem but it seems to be fixed now. The transparency is in all modes.

    • alex285

hmm? Where did you see the top panel transparency?

      • Michael Mistretta

The glare is so bad on that picture I had to zoom in to notice that it was using the ‘stripes’ wallpaper. What I thought was the wallpaper was actually reflections from the window and the trees outside. (Actually makes the illusion of pretty cool wallpaper lol).

        • IsacDaavid

This is why I dislike glossy screens

    • gevera

You can set the transparency of the top panel by using this extension. Check in the settings https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/358/activities-configurator/

    what is this laptop?

    • Kekun

      It’s a Chromebook Pixel.

  • ApostolisA

so, I guess it runs on Pixel smoothly, or is it a different OS (possibly GNOME OS)?

  • anon

    gentoo and gnome? jajajaja

  • Magneira

Is there any way to install gnome 3.9 on fedora, or any other os?

    • alex285

Yes, with Fedora Rawhide or Ubuntu GNOME 13.10 + GNOME Repos

      • Magneira

Tks for the reply! do you think that fedora Rawhide, which as far as i know is what will become fedora 20, is stable enough to use daily? Its for my personal computer, not for work or anything.

        • alex285

Most of the time is, but is possible to get a broken GDM and be lockdown from the UI. From my personal experience, most of the issues in Rawhide are coming from GNOME. Is better to wait for GNOME Beta release before trying Rawhide, except if you can have dual boot.

          • Magneira

            Tks again for the reply!
